April weather is here: beautiful on Sunday, sunburned faces everywhere on Monday, downpour this morning.
Birds‘ twitter, short-sleeved t-shirts, cagoule within reach, ice cream, gardening, daylight when we get up, daylight when J goes to bed, open back door, bulgur salad for dinner – the whole nine yards 🙂 Even work is more fun.
I love this time of the year!
When starting this project in January, I would crochet 5 flowers the day and the boy would arrange them on our living room table. The idea was to make a blanket from stash (of the same brand) but within a short time I ran out of white. As a matter of fact – the store is not around the corner, life keeps me busy, other projects were tempting – I still haven’t bought adequate supply … However, we needed the living room table and fortunately the boy agreed to remove the flowers if I would take a picture of his composition. (Supposedly, there is a system to it. I don’t see it though). Here is the picture:
Now, all the flowers are nicely piled in a shoebox (probably forever) and my only excuse is that even if I bought a skein of white I still don’t know which color to use to join them. Green? Brown?
The weather outside is downright miserable—cold, rainy, just plain NASTY—and for some reason, it’s making me want to repost the flower blanket. Here it is, snuggled up with the kid for scale and company.
Recently, I started working on a “summer version” made from pure cotton, but of course the store ran out of red and pink… so now I’m stuck. Do I arrange the squares randomly, leaving out red and pink entirely? Or do I wait until next summer, hoping the colors will finally be back in stock? Maybe I’ll surf the web (why didn’t I think of that sooner?!) and see if I can find the yarn online.
Either way, it’s shaping up to be a true 2013 project – slow, evolving, and full of little decisions along the way.
I started these little flower squares back in 2010 – yes, 2010 – and maybe I needed a blog to finally admit it: this will NEVER become a proper blanket. NEVER. Each tiny flower square measures just an inch… so small, so delicate, yet there are so many of them.
But now I’m stuck. What am I actually going to do with them? Turn them into greeting cards? A mini scarf of flower squares? Perhaps a decorative border of some sort? Or maybe, just maybe, stretch them out into a baby blanket, letting the flowers scatter randomly across it? And then there’s the big question: what colors should I use, and how should I arrange them? I honestly have no idea.
So I’m turning to you—what would you do? Suggestions, ideas, or even wild, whimsical plans are all more than welcome!

This morning we woke up to snow! It didn’t last very long, but still – SNOW. Just seeing everything dusted in white, even for a little while, felt like a small surprise gift from winter.
I guess that means it’s officially time for me to start another blanket – something warm and cozy to work on while the weather still insists on being cold. There’s just something about working on a blanket when it’s chilly outside that makes it feel extra comforting, like you’re creating your own little bit of warmth one stitch at a time.
This time it’s going to be African Flowers in true ’70s colors – pink, purple, red, and turquoise. I’ve already started, and I have to say, I really love how it’s coming together so far!
